Building the Lamma Power Station

Historic video of the Power
Station construction
"Take a Time Travel Trip:
The History Chapter When our HK
predecessors were choosing a
site for the Lamma Power
Station, they took every aspect
into account: space, terrain and
environmental conservation.
In the end, they settled on
'Polo To', a location that
perfectly combines functionality
with natural beauty.
The power station is backed by
mountains and faces the sea,
surrounded on all sides by
water, with various animals
living nearby – the environment
is truly wonderful!

Hub' during its construction?

Helicopter Hovering 50m Above
Your House

Mute Planet:
"Talk about once-in-a-blue-moon!
It’s not every night you are
jolted awake by a helicopter
hovering 50m above your house,
scanning the forest with its
searchlights.
While the reasons behind the
drama are yet to be revealed, it
did make for a memorable
photo-op. [Photo: Mark

AIA Carnival @ Central Ferry
Piers

Just a 5-minute walk from the
Lamma ferry pier in Central HK,
the World Carnival is well worth
a visit, especially after sunset
when it's all brightly
illuminated and more bustling
than when I visited for lunch
yesterday, see empty queue
above.
No entry fee for seniors, but
the many food and drink options
are all pretty pricey, but tasty
and some of them uncommon and
exciting.

"Lamma IV victims 'unlawfully
killed'"

"Damage is seen on a ferry
berthed at Lamma Island,
October 2, 2012"
"HK Coroner's Court rules Lamma
IV victims
'unlawfully killed"
"Hong Kong’s Coroner’s
Court ruled on Wednesday that 39
people who died in one of the
city’s worst sea collisions in
decades were “unlawfully killed”
after a 44-day inquest into the
2012 Lamma ferry disaster
reached a verdict.
The victims, including eight
children aged 10 and younger,
died when the Lamma IV – a
vessel chartered by Hong Kong
Electric Company to take its
employees to watch a National
Day fireworks display in
Victoria Harbour
–
collided with the passenger sea
ferry Sea Smooth
–
near Lamma Island on the evening
of Oct 1, 2012.
The ferry was on a scheduled run
from Hong Kong Island’s Central
District to Yung Shue Wan on
Lamma when the accident
occurred.
The captains of both vessels had
earlier been convicted in
connection with the tragedy. Lai
Sai-ming, who commanded the Sea
Smooth at the time, was found
guilty of manslaughter in 2015,
while the captain of the Lamma
IV, Chow Chi-wai, was acquitted
of manslaughter, but convicted
of the lesser offense of
endangering the safety of others
at sea.
Lai was jailed for eight years,
and Chow for nine months.
Despite the convictions, their
families had insisted that the
Coroner’s Court conduct an open
hearing on the case.
Ferry skipper Lai Sai-ming, who
was sentenced to eight years in
prison earlier this year for the
manslaughter of 39 passengers
who died in the Lamma ferry
disaster in October 2012, is
appealing against his jail term.
The inquest, which was held from
May to September last year, was
presided over by Coroner Monica
Chow Wai-choo who sat without a
jury, with 84 witnesses giving
evidence...."

"HK
Electric’s Response
to Coroner's Verdict on Death
Inquest for Vessel Collision
Near Lamma Island in 2012
The Coroner's Court yesterday
and today (22 Jan 2026)
delivered its full verdict on
the causes for death arising
from the 2012 vessel collision
near Lamma Island. A
spokesperson of HK Electric said
the Company fully respects the
Court’s verdict.
The spokesperson added that the
incident remains an extremely
painful chapter of the Company,
and once again we extend the
deepest condolences to the
families of all who lost their
lives, including our colleagues
who perished.
Immediately after the incident,
the Company conducted a thorough
review and implemented a full
suite of enhanced safety and
fleet-management measures, based
on the recommendations of the
2013 Commission of Inquiry and
other expert advice.
These include more stringent
vessel inspection and acceptance
procedures, upgraded equipment
and safety standards, improved
internal audits and safety
protocols, all reflecting our
commitment to safeguarding our
fleet and its passengers.
The Company will study the
verdict in detail and consider
any further measures necessary
to improve our safety and
management practices."
P.S. HKFP:
‘Extremely disappointed’:
"Lamma ferry disaster verdict
leaves families outraged “For 13
years, we wanted to find the
truth about who was responsible,
and what we got was the word
‘unrealistic’.
I'm outraged,” sales manager
Alice Leung, who lost her
brother in the Lamma IV ferry
tragedy in 2012, said of a
long-awaited coroner’s verdict."

Police Drones Overhead

Look up, Lammaites, when you
hear the unmistakeable whirring
of a drone floating in the sky!
It might not be an
overly-enthusiastic, drone-flying
neighbour or their kids
excitedly trying out their
Christmas present. It could be a
police drone taking surveyance
video of your activities,
illicit or not!
So our local police force has a
new toy to play with, much more
fun than to chase down all these
electric bikes, skateboards and
hoverboards that are all illegal
on Lamma.

Police expand drone patrols
to the Peak,
outlying Islands to combat
crime

Bliss!

How little does it take to make
a Lammaite or visitor happy?
Case in point: My lunch today in
Jaybird Rest., YSW
harbourside.
Sitting outdoors on a cushioned
chair in warm weather (see clock
tower in picture) and this
amazing, peaceful view of the
harbour and the ferry pier,
sipping this very pretty and
tasty hot chocolate below, after lunch
of a burrito and a glass of rose
wine, no worry about the time;
that's the encapsulation of a
happy, often blissful
experience.

Senselessart Exhibition

This is
one of the pictures
exhibited right now in Rachel
Smith's
solo show @ Major Pop Gallery,
Sai Street, Sheung Wan:

Wow, I haven't seen all these
great new works from
Rachel Smith since we
both were in an
Abandoned House group exhibition
(more
photos) together in an
abandoned villa in the deepest
New Territory just 2 years ago.
Official invitation by Rachel,
also a very talented writer:
"In
a wayside forest, a
long-abandoned building sits,
dreaming of days gone by when it
was the heart of a family. Then
on Saturday, 20 May, 2023, this
silent, forgotten home will be
transformed by a diverse group
of artists into an underground
celebration of creativity and
freedom.
A
select group of art lovers will
arrive by bus. They will find
the space alive once more.
Visitors will freely wander
through corridors and hallways,
discovering rooms and hidden
corners filled with
installations, paintings,
sculptures and performances.
The
space is abandoned, unregarded
and unloved but for one
afternoon. We seek to encourage
and challenge people to try
something different, something
far from the shopping malls,
chain stores and coffee shops.
Then, at the end of the day, as
all the visitors disperse, the
group will pack up their work
and disappear into the dusk,
leaving behind only traces of
their creativity and a sense of
hope for a more vibrant,
expressive and inclusive city."
If this made you curious, here
are my own photos and
"hallucinations":

Afterwards, I expanded and
further developed my pictures
into my Wall Calendar 2025:

I highly recommend to visit Rachel's
So Long HK exhibition!
Just one more week!

Wow - I am once again
overwhelmed.

Underground Wins 3 Awards!

Founded by ex-Lammaite

won 3 well-deserved awards from
HKClubbing.com. She writes:
"For a tiny independent platform
that started in 2004 with a
simple dream – to give original
bands a stage and a community –
this is honestly overwhelming.
Everyone who voted, everyone who
came and/or performed at The

win belongs to you as much as it
does to The Underground team."

Sweet Potato Blog

"Francis Cheng, Managing
Director of Hong Kong Electric,
has launched a new quarterly
column titled
Sweet Potato
Pages, which officially debuted
today (1 January 2026).
The title "Sweet Potato Pages"
cleverly plays on the Cantonese
pronunciation to signify
"Francis' Pages", embodying
both Mr Cheng's pragmatic
approach and approachable
manner, alongside his emphasis
on team development.
This
mirrors the solidarity seen in
sweet potatoes, which often grow
in clusters or multiple tubers
underground. Through Mr Cheng's
perspective, the column will
share HEC's latest developments
and strategic direction,
highlighting progress in
innovation, smart grid
construction, and carbon
reduction initiatives.
This aims
to strengthen communication with
stakeholders, showcase HEC's
pragmatic, reliable and
professional corporate culture,
and enhance transparency and
community engagement.
The Sweet
Potato Pages conclude with a
special note highlighting Mr
Cheng's management philosophy:
"embracing sustainability,
valuing team development, and
pragmatically embracing change."
The Sweet Potato Pages will be
published quarterly on the
HK
Electric website and
the
HK Electric App. Your
support is greatly
appreciated."
