Black Rainstorm

First time in a long time that
Lamma Island got a
special mention in these
frequent reports from the
HK Observatory.
Lamma experienced a really epic
thunderstorm and waterfall-like
showers (>100mm/hour),
causing severe flooding in
several villages. The
first
Black Rainstorm
warning signal this year (much
worse than a mere Red Rainstorm
signal). I has even been causing
some ferry routes to shut down
temporarily.
Above is the view from the YSW ferry pier
this morning. Below is a more
common YSW harbour view these
stunning summer days, taken by
Rob Aldridge.

P.S. The 2.
Black Rainstorm warning signal
of this year came only a few
days later, on Aug 5:

Night Surfing Club

Brendan Sheridan:
"In the six years I've been on
Lamma, I've never seen anything
like the last ten days or so,
before and after typhoon Wipha.
Having consistent waves for that
long of a stretch is unusual.
There's only a 2-3 month stretch
in the summer when there will be
swells bringing waves to Lamma's
south-facing beaches, so noone
would ever move to Lamma for the
surf. But it's one hell of a
bonus to have for someone who
already enjoys living on Lamma.
Hung Shing Ye Night Surfing Club
is still open to new applicants.

First T10 of the Year!

No ferries today at all!
Typhoon Signal No. 9
went up at 7:20am today, T8 was
up most of the night. No more
ferries at all till T8 will be
lifted much later today, maybe,
maybe not.
HK Observatory Bulletin issued
at 05:45 HKT 20/Jul/2025
"Tropical
Cyclone Warning Bulletin
The No. 8 Northeast Gale or
Storm Signal is in force.
This means that winds with mean
speeds of 63 kilometres per hour
or more are expected from the
northeast quarter.
At 6 a.m.,
Typhoon Wipha was centred about
130 kilometres southeast of Hong
Kong and is forecast to be
edging closer to the vicinity of
the Pearl River Estuary.
Wipha will skirt at about 50
kilometres south of the Hong
Kong Observatory towards noon
today (20 July)...
With Wipha edging further
closer, adverse weather is
expected to persist with heavy
squally showers during the day
today. Seas will be high
with swells. Members of the
public should stay away from the
shoreline and not to engage in
water sports. Under the
influence of storm surge, there
may be flooding over parts of
the low-lying coastal areas this
morning. The water level rose to
about 3 metres above Chart
Datum:"

P.S. Just 8 minutes
ago,
T10 has
been raised, the highest
possible, not seen in HK in
years!
"The Hurricane Signal, No. 10,
was issued at 9:20 a.m. This
means that winds with mean
speeds of 118 kilometres per
hour or more are expected.
Wipha will be closest to Hong
Kong in the next couple of
hours, skirting about 50
kilometres to the south of the
Hong Kong Observatory, posing a
considerable threat to Hong."

P.S. II
District (Typhoon) Shelters
are now open on the major HK
Islands!
P.S. III
"Prior to Typhoon Wipha, the
most recent T10 typhoon to hit
Hong Kong was Super Typhoon
Saola on September 1, 2023.
Other recent T10 typhoons
include Mangkhut in 2018, Hato
in 2017, and Vicente in 2012."

Green Energy Dreams Come True

"This year's Hong Kong Electric
"Green Energy Dream Come True"
competition was very inspiring!
The teams were not only very
clever, but also full of
creativity.

The winning projects span
environmental technology, smart
city, sustainable living, etc.,
not only gimmicks, but also
practical:
-
AI
helps sick trees, using
optical technology to do
health analysis.
-
Artificial trees collect
rainwater and air moisture,
then use solar energy to
clean the water.
-
Algae living walls absorb
carbon, produce oxygen, cool
down to create green
buildings of the future.
-
There are also charging
shoes that can generate
electricity on the road,
function and concept!
These are not just student
works, they are new
possibilities for future life!"

Smart Power Gallery 2.0

Managing Director Mr.
Francis C.Y. Cheng warmly
welcomes a group of students
from the “Happy Green Schools”
programme during their visit to
Smart Power Gallery 2.0
"Promoting a Smart, Zero-Carbon
and Caring Hong Kong
HK Electric has unveiled the
upgraded Smart Power Gallery 2.0
(SPG 2.0), offering visitors a
revitalised and interactive
experience that showcases the
Company’s energy transformation
and commitment to
sustainability.

To combat climate change, the
energy sector has undergone a
progressive transformation—from
mainly using coal to natural gas
to reduce greenhouse gases in
electricity generation, and now
towards a broader adoption of
renewable energy, planning to
import zero-carbon electricity,
and exploring the potential of
green hydrogen.'
The five-storey Smart Power
Gallery 2.0 features exhibits
that highlight the structural
transformation in energy
production and showcase
innovative approaches to
enhancing energy efficiency. It
also provides an in-depth
overview of Hong Kong’s
strategic roadmap towards
achieving carbon neutrality by
2050."

Liaoning Leaving

Today, the Shandong has been

Shandong Arriving

"A visitor in our local waters
(and the reason for this
morning's ferry suspension).
Quite a sight.
It may not be as vast as the
aircraft carriers of yesteryear,
but the Shandong — China’s first
domestically-built aircraft
carrier — is an impressive piece
of modern war machinery.
Pictured here in near Lamma
Island, the carrier has arrived
in Hong Kong waters with a
retinue of warships for a five
day visit." [Photo:

Ferry Services Interruption

There will be no ferry service
from Lamma to Central and
Aberdeen from 07:20-09:40 on
July 3 (Thursday) and
10:30-12:00 on July 7 (Monday).
Rush hour commuter ferries to be
suspended Thu as Chin. naval
fleet arrives in HK (HK Free
Press)

A first-ever ferry from
YSW to Discovery Bay
and back on
the same day to support some of
the many delayed commuters. Best
reaction to this historic event
from
Pavillion Roadhouse:
"LAMMAAAAAA!" You noble
sun-baked warriors of Yung Shue
Wan! Tomorrow… the tides will
betray us. Our usual path to
Hong Kong Island… BLOCKED!
A
mighty armada of Chinese
warships, big enough to carry
karaoke lounges and suspiciously
high-ranking admirals stands
between us and our destination.
But do we surrender? Do we cower
in our hammocks and compost
bins? Nay! We RIDE!
For this day, and this day only,
a ferry of fate has been
summoned. A one-off,
once-in-a-moonlit-tide, sailing
straight from our shores to the
realm of Discovery Bay! A place
for brunches, tennis, and
well-behaved dogs!
Will you let this rare vessel
sail empty into obscurity? Or
will you rise, flip-flops
flapping, reusable coffee cups
clutched firmly and CLAIM YOUR
RIGHTFUL RIDE?
They may take our schedules… but
they’ll never take our obscure
transport options!"
