Dec 26:  Turtles, Lamma's Only Wildlife?

This is a wonderful new Wildlife Map of HK from the World Wildlife Fund, showing the best wildlife spots all over HK.

But on Lamma it lists ONLY the endangered Green Turtles on protected Sham Wan Turtle Beach where no turtles have been spotted for several years. Surely, there's a lot more wildlife all over Lamma that we can spot almost daily while hiking during the current, glorious, sunny, balmy, blue-sky days!

Have a look at Lamma Corner's Lamma map which shows quite a few of the best local wildlife spots. This printed map is available only in the Lamma Corner shop a the end of Main Street, just after the still famous Bookworm Cafe.

Here's a sneak peek of this A2-sized tourist/ecology map which includes tourist info, great photos and 3 ecology routes:

Dec 24:  Santa Tracked to HK

NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command tracks Santa every year on his frantic trip around the world! He made it to HK and Lamma Island (right of "HONG KONG" on GPS map below) just on time today!

(Very timely screen shot from Marcus Langston)

P.S. Dec 25: Zooming in on Santa (over 5 billion presents delivered by now, Christmas Day 11:30! A bit disappointed I didn't get even one of them.)

Dec 17:  Sham Mat Nor ~ 2nd Solo Exhibition

Artist Sham, Just Kitchen's Sam, a major Sham-fan, plus 2 minor Sham fans. This exhibition was a real surprise as almost NOBODY knew that locally well-known, fun-guy Sham is also a painter besides a junior football coach, Powerstation beach entrepreneur and many other activities.

Lamma's very first Outdoor Exhibition Area (I think), just outside of Just Kitchen. All the furniture plus all the canvases & frames were manufactured by multi-talented Georgian Sam (center above, he also designs ALL their publicity materials,  posters, banners, menus, etc.!), proprietor of the only Georgian restaurant in all of HK!

Dec 16:  2018 HK Electric Tariff Lower Than 2013

You might have seen the recent news about our HK Electric's tariff increase of around 2 percent for 2018 over current tariffs?

Here's their take on it, it's actually a DECREASE from several years ago:

2018 Tariff Lower than 2013 Despite Tariff Rebound

Dec 15:  Drawing Every Day

Daniel Clarke writes:

"Drawing Every Day : The Book

This is a 100 page glossy package celebrating my year of drawing. I'm very proud of it and I'm selling copies for HK$280

It has themed chapters on Hong Kong, Lamma Island, Dragons, Wildlife and more. All the highlights plus a bit of commentary for context.

Plus a full chronological list of all 365 pictures from the year.

Please let me know if you'd like a copy.

Or you can pick up a copy at Cath's Bar (Banyan Bay Cafe) and check out the exhibition at the same time."

Plus a link to Daniel's solo exhibition, still running till March in Banyan Bay Cafe.

A longtime acquaintance, Daniel has been featured a number of times in the Lamma-zine over the years.

Here are my own favourite little "creative experiment" with a photo of him and his wife & fellow artist Kate Allert at one of the many Lamma birthday parties, this one 70s-themed:

Dec 14:  Having a Great Time in New York

Leaving Lamma for the holidays and New Year? Here are a few tips from a sponsor to consider visiting New York. There are direct flights, from my personal experience: 12 time zones, opposite side of the Earth, maximum jet lag, but very well worth the long flights!

5 Ways to Have a Great Time in New York with Your Beloved

New York is not an ideal city. As well as any other city, it has many problems and the latent drawbacks. However, traveling to New York is really not about the city but about people and your emotions. New York is the story of those who have fallen in love with its spirit and consider any time of the year to be the best time to travel to New York.
There are some new things that should appear on your mood board. So, there are 5 ideas from
J4l to have a great time with your beloved one if you are going to travel to New York, to this most beautiful and diverse city in the world.

  1. Listen to Jazz.
Vogue changes, but jazz remains and continues to be an important and integral part of NYC's life, culture, and style. So, if you have a travel in New York, be sure to visit a jazz club with your partner. As a rule, NYC jazz clubs are quite ascetic, all people gather for high-quality music. Most places are on small premises, often in basements with steep stairs. You should better come earlier, by the time of opening the doors. The best places are given to those who come first. There is an example of New York City travel guide of jazz clubs.
Smalls is an intelligent, cozy club in the basement in the greenest area of Greenwich Village, where you can hear everything from traditional jazz to avant-garde bands and real jam sessions of New York musicians.
Smoke Jazz Club is an atmospheric jazz club in Harlem with good acoustics and frenzied energy. The club is famous for inviting musicians of only the highest class.
Dizzy's Club Coca Cola is suitable if you do not want to go down in stuffy basements, but want to listen to quality music in a more glamorous atmosphere while sipping cocktails, overlooking Central Park.
  2. Go vintage shopping.
New York is primarily people and stories, and the main keepers of human stories are things. It seems difficult to come up with a better city for vintage shopping than NYC. Moreover, everything new is a well-forgotten old. Go to cult secondhand markets for the best fashion finds. Local residents claim that the best one is Beacon's closet Greenpoint in Williamsburg.
  3. Swim in the pool in the nightclub.
Perhaps, New York is a real mecca of advanced party-goers. In New York, you can visit a penthouse party with a pool on the dance floor. At a certain moment of the evening, everyone can dive in and refresh themselves right in clothes. The bonus is the world's best DJs and chic views of New York's nightlife. In general, do not miss Le Bain.
  4. To hang out at the morning party.
If the night parties are for your, and you hold on to the healthy lifestyle, try to go to the morning party. These parties are arranged in different locations, including some nightclubs. In general, everything that happens there, is not much different from ordinary parties (loud music, bright neon lights, disco), everything starts at 6 am on weekdays, and all guests are dressed in pajamas.
The party opens with morning yoga, and after that, everything turns into incendiary dances before the start of the working day. Juice, coffee and protein shakes are used instead of alcohol. The bonus is a breakfast of buns and yogurts. In addition, people can enjoy themselves with a face mask. At 9 am, the party ends, and the positive New Yorkers are going to work.
  5. Have a date at the bar on the roof of the skyscraper.
Despite the fact that all the fashionable youth hang out in Williamsburg and Brooklyn, this authentic New York from "Sex and the City" is still in Manhattan. It seems, being a tourist, it's not a shame to go up to the upper floors of a skyscraper and drink a cocktail with a partner of dreams.

Dec 12:  Kinesiology Open House

Our former, great Sha Po Old Village neighbour Brett Scott going from strength to strength with his growing team.

Brett treated one of my step-grandsons with "tickle therapy". It was hilarious to watch for his Gung-Gung & Poh-Poh, so different from usual treatments!

Free intro/Open House this Saturday in Central:

Kinesiology Asia, 9/F Cheung Hing Commercial Building,
37 Cochrane Street, Central, Hong Kong

Dec 9:  Eventuality of Factual Disputes at Quiztmas

One more fun poster for the Island Bar by Lamma's inimitable Harry Harrison! "Obscure Hong Kong Bands" *might* be featured in the musical quiz. We wonder if Harry's Midlife Crisis Cowboys will be the musical accompaniment for the quiz? Maybe not this time...

Here's a partial list in our Lamma Events Calendar, updated almost daily, not including the increasingly numerous Operation Santa Claus events, multiple appearances of Santa Claus and many other traditional fundraising events.
