May 7:  My Favourite Lamma Lunch

Trying to find any proper non-Chinese lunch in Yung Shue Wan for below $100 has become very difficult, almost impossible as the local restaurants have become so much more expensive over the last years.

By far, my personal favourite and very best value for money: Spicy Island Restaurant and Bar!

"We offer Thali Set Lunches for only $89!

Choose from Lamb, Chicken, Fish or Vegetable curries. Set includes a side (pulao rice or naan bread), salad, appetiser and a drink (soft drink, tea or coffee)!

Available Mon-Fri, 12-3pm, except public holidays.

You can check out our full menu here.
Tel. 2982 0289, 7A-B Yung Shue Wan Main Street"

This is my own recent photo of my favourite lunch on Lamma:

May 6:  New Diesel Electric Hybrid Ferry

Brand-new government-subsidised ($3 of $8 milllion) passenger ferries propelled by Diesel electric hybrid propulsion systems (plus rooftop solar cells) started up on Sat, May 4, by HKKF on the Central-YSW route.

This new ferry will cut the journey time to 20 minutes. It runs on electric whilst docking, and Diesel when in motion on open sea.

Click on the photo above for video & photos of the inside and lots of comments from Lammaites.
Major complaint: No outdoor seating anymore!

May 5:  Mox Lamma 500

So many photos and videos from our yearly international dragonboat festival Lamma 500 on Power Station Beach!

Truly international, off-Lamma teams like the Spanish Dragons, Buzz Dragonboating Society, Tadodragons, United Gorkha Community of India - HK, Flying Kiwis Dragon Boat Team etc. joined all the local teams!

Many thanks to all the numerous supporters and sponsors, for example HK Electric who opened up the nearby, usually totally closed-off Power Station area for the races' setup of the finishing line.

Apr 30:  The Bohemians Loved Lamma!

"Hello everyone!!!
We just pass by here to share with all of you our gratitude from yesterday night and the day before, we definitely feel at home in Lamma island and we really appreciate your amazing vibe.
Thank you very much!!!"

"We managed to put together two completely different sets for both of the gigs, and for us it was a complete success!!!

We had a lot of fun with a full house in The Waterfront and an over-crowded Candela on Saturday night :P

I must say that in both of them I could feel the beautiful, wonderful vibe from Lamma in all its aspects... Smiling, dancing, singing... Real fun people... Really a blessing to be with such wonderfullers!! .. Who I feel like calling "Lamma Family" :P

Actually I was talking with friends about our Lamma experience... and I must say that it is one of the most amazing, friendly places we have been... and probably one of those places where there is a major concentration of nice people per m2!! :P

Really glad to come to Lamma and definitely really willing to come back... With love, The Bohemian's"

So many comments, photos & videos from their 2 concerts in YSW, Waterfront & Candela: see gig posters!

Apr 29:  When Retirees Wish Upon a Star

2nd runner-up: Elder Clowns in Town learn the art of clown performance, including clown makeup, balloon twisting, magic tricks, and juggling, bringing fun and laughter to wherever needed in town.

Launched in July last year, the U3A Dream+ scheme (video) by HK Electric provides funding to retirees enabling them to realise their dreams. Seven projects focusing on physical and mental well-being, low-carbon living, artistic creations, and environmental conservation have been completed, serving 66 community units and 9,570 people.

The U3A "dreamers" recapped their journeys today in a final presentation and competed for the grand awards. The seven selected teams came from five U3A self-learning centres.

The grand-award winning project Journey through Story (see above) captivated the judges and the audience with their heart-warming storybook about dementia. The team hoped to develop itself further and craft more meaningful stories for the community.

MENROR the Choir which also come from the same centre were named first runners-up. This senior boy choir polishes their vocal skills and brings music and happiness to people in need.

Apr 28:  Mister Snotballs

HAVE YOU SEEN MISTER SNOTBALLS?

Mister Snotballs is a street/shop cat with many years of experience.
He can often be found at the little shop next to the nullah, just before you cross the bridge to head to ferry. The shopkeepers feed him every evening.
He goes on patrols in the area behind the shop – around the new houses at the start of the Yung Shu Wan Village valley.
He has been MIA for the last three days. It is very unlike him not pitch up for his dinner. We're a bit concerned about him.
He is neutered and is in the process of being vaccinated – he is due back at Hans for another shot in about a week.

Please keep an eye out for Mister Snotballs. He’s friendly and affectionate, but won’t let someone he doesn't know pick him up. If you could contact me and let me know where you've seen him, that would be great.

UPDATE:
In typical cat style, Mister Snotballs waited for me to post before emerging victorious from the jungle, inhaling three days worth of food and collapsing into a box in the shop…

Apr 24:  Upcycling Out-of-Fashion Into Green Fashion

Interesting news for Lamma's fashionistas, designers and clothes upcyclers:

HK Electric is launching a green fashion design competition on Earth Day 2024 last week to encourage the public to reduce waste by turning unwanted items into new outfits.

Entitled "Back in Fashion", the competition was launched at an upcycling workshop held for more than 80 students of Victoria Educational Organisation.

The event also kicked off this year's Happy Green Campaign, a signature programme run by HK Electric to educate the public on energy efficiency, renewable energy and low-carbon lifestyle.

"Ms. Mimi Yeung (1st right), Principal Fong (2nd left) and Dr. Tsang are joined by three kindergarten students to unveil two key initiatives of Happy Green Campaign 2024 - the "Back in Fashion" green fashion design competition and an action planner supporting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, both aimed to encourage all to go green and low-carbon."

Now open for enrolment, the "Back in Fashion" green fashion design competition invites the public to reduce waste by turning unwanted items into new outfits. Finalists will showcase their works in a catwalk in July to compete for the grand awards.

Bringing the Out-of-Fashion back in Fashion

Apr 23:  Preview of LAMMA DAY

Preview of our yearly LAMMA DAY on May 1st in YSW, also called Tin Hau Festival day plus Dragon Boat Race plus several days of Cantonese opera in the Football Pitch. Giving you an advance impression of what it'll look like, these are my best Tin Hau Festival/ Dragonboating photos from a few years ago:

Also, have visit to the always entertaining Cantonese opera in the YSW Football Pitch from April 30 till May 4, evenings, plus afternoon performances on public holidays. Standing outside the opera tent is free and has fine-enough views. Bring a long lens for closeup pictures.

Here's my photo album of the yearly building of the massive bamboo arena:

Apr 22:  HK Electric Volunteers Team!

While strolling or hiking through Lamma villages (or elsewhere all over HK) you might have encountered these teams in their special red-white polo shirts, doing beach cleaning, tree planting, caring for our elderlies and other great community-focused activities and good deeds.
Many thanks to the HK Electric volunteers from our community! What have they been up to recently?

"With local society resuming normal after the pandemic, HK Electric Volunteers Team revived its face-to-face services in full swing in 2023, actively supporting various community and environmental projects to live out the Company's core value of "caring". Let's take a stroll down the memory lane to appreciate some of the happy and touching moments."

Apr 17:  Sharing a Beard

Proud moustache and big beard wearers are multiplying on Lamma! (photo submitted to Lamma-zine by Elizabeth J Dooley) on Nick's request who's generous and good-humoured enough to share his beard with 2 friends.

P.S. Apr 18: One more photo, just submitted overnight. These guys are doing their utmost to keep Lamma's totally outdated, ancient, last-millennium reputation as "Hippie Island" alive!

They write: "Look who we found on Lamma!!! :P

Apr 9:  New Gas-Fired Power Generation Unit

"Unit L12 at Lamma Power Station began commercial operation in end March 2024."

"HK Electric has entered into a contract to construct a new gas-fired generation unit manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), at Lamma Power Station (LPS).
This new project is an integral part of the Company's 2024 - 2028 Development Plan instrumental to the phasing out of coal-fired generation by 2035.

With the commissioning of L12, HEC's share of natural gas for power generation will increase from about 56% in 2023 to about 70% in 2024, with a corresponding reduction in #carbon emissions.

With proper modifications and repurposing, all these units can use both natural gas and hydrogen as fuels in future. In support of the Government's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, HK Electric has been studying the use and introduction of green hydrogen as one of the zero-carbon energy alternatives in HK...."

Apr 8:  HK Electric's New "Smart Housekeeper"

Introducing the brand-new robot inspector patrolling inside the Cable Tunnel from Lamma to Cyberport!

He is a new "trackless" two-wheeled robot introduced by HK Electric, and he is now stationed in the Cyberport Cable Tunnel as an intelligent housekeeper for the entire tunnel!

Cable tunnels are confined spaces and there are a lot of safety considerations when entering the tunnels. In the past, it was only possible to arrange for professionally trained staff to enter the tunnels on a regular basis to ensure that the equipment was functioning properly, and a lot of manpower had to be mobilised before and after the event.

This smart housekeeper is being sent to inspect the cable tunnel once a day, which greatly increases the frequency of inspections and saves manpower, helping to enhance the reliability of the transmission and distribution system.

This Smart Butler, equipped with various sensors, plays a crucial role. These sensors include:

Gas Analyzers: These real-time sensors detect common gases and oxygen levels within the enclosed space.

Infrared Detectors: They inspect cable and tunnel installations.

Leveraging the advantages of 5G network speed and low latency, the Smart Butler remotely monitors and controls operations.
It provides real-time feedback on images and monitoring data, ensuring the safe operation of equipment and cables within the tunnel.
