Feb 14:  'Sweet Wishes & Happy Valentine's Day!'

"Sweet Wishes & Happy Valentine's Day!

It's Valentine's Day, and with Chinese New Year just around the corner next week, alongside the flowers and chocolates, there's also a sweet token of affection from the community.

Double the festive cheer, double the sweet wishes!

Yang Kwong-tung, General Manager of the Transmission and Distribution Department and Captain of the HK Electric District Service Team (Southern District), has sent out a team of Transmission and Distribution staff across the community, presenting neighbours with Lunar New Year glutinous rice cakes symbolising 'sweetness and stickiness', and to hand-deliver love and best wishes!

These staff members normally stay behind the scenes, quietly ensuring a stable power supply ⚡. During the festive season, they step out into the community to interact with everyone up close.

They also said they'd take the opportunity of Valentine's Day to wish everyone "sweet love and a fulfilling life!"

Feb 12:  HK Electric Coconut Cake

The yearly Fortune Rice handout to Lamma's elderly included this surprise goody, a Lunar New Year cake from HK Electric:

Translation of the cake label with Google Lens:

This is the rest of the goodies, plus 1l of peach juice.

So tough to hand-carry all of these goodies, plus the 5kg of Thai rice, all the way home, reminding me to bring a trolley next year.

Feb 11:  Supporting NGOs’ Low-carbon Journey

"HK Electric Managing Director Mr. Francis C.Y. Cheng (2nd right) gives out New Year gift bags to elderly residents at the TWGHs Fong Shu Chuen Social Service Building and adds a festive touch to their dinner..."

"Launched in 2025, HK Electric’s enhanced Energy-efficient Community Subsidy Programme under Smart Power Services provides up to $3 million in full subsidies for non-residential customers, non-profit organisations and schools to adopt energy-efficient electrical equipment – including electric kitchen appliances, air-conditioning systems, energy-saving rooftop coatings, and solar photovoltaic systems.

The TWGHs Fong Shu Chuen Social Service Building has adopted multiple energy-saving measures under HK Electric’s subsidy programme, delivering encouraging results.

During a visit today (11 February) to the scheme’s first beneficiary, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, HK Electric Managing Director Mr. Francis C.Y. Cheng was pleased to learn that the building is expected to achieve a 15–20% reduction in overall carbon emissions within a year.

Mr. Cheng added that HK Electric will continue to work closely with community partners to enhance energy efficiency, introduce smart management technologies, and promote renewable energy.

Together, these efforts will drive decarbonisation on multiple fronts and foster a greener and more sustainable living environment for Hong Kong. For more information:

Feb 10:  No Electric Mobility

Still in effect: Electric vehicles of any type are strictly forbidden anywhere on Lamma, except electric wheelchairs, the police might confiscate them.

The irony of living on island whre the most prominent company is HK Electric who's heavily promoting electric mobility in many areas, like setting up free public EV charging stations, assisting customers in installing EV charging facilities and half of their operating fleet now being electric.

But speeding, noisy, stinky, Diesel-powered VVs are permitted, causing occasional collisions with pedestrians and dogs, clogging up not only YSW Main Street:

Feb 9:  A Lanternbug in Mid-Winter

Lamma's most beautiful bug, the Lanternbug, making a very unseasonally early appearance these days! But it's been 20 degrees daytime for most of Jan and Feb so far.

Daniel Clarke: "We have a little visitor… a lantern bug!
iNaturalist has been informed."

Feb 6:  A Peak in Scams

HK Electric: "Only SMS messages starting with "#" are genuine! Always verify the source of text messages!

The year-end period sees a peak in scams. Hong Kong Electric reminds everyone: Fraudsters may impersonate Hong Kong Electric via SMS, falsely claiming your electricity bill is overdue to lure you into clicking fraudulent websites provided in the message.

To protect yourself, remember these anti-scam measures:

1.  Only genuine HK Electric SMS messages begin with "#"!
Authentic HK Electric messages are exclusively sent as "#HKElectric".

If you don't see the "#" symbol, or notice misspellings or unusual formatting, it's almost certainly a scam!

2.  Do not click, reply, or enter any details! Never click links in suspicious SMS/emails, and never transfer money or enter personal details like bank account numbers or ID numbers as instructed!
HK Electric staff will never ask for passwords. Do not trust suspicious calls pretending to be official!

3.  Check bills & pay via official channels only HK Electric App http://www.hkelectric.com.
Log in to online Access (#AOL) to view bills and payment details!

4.  Need to enquire?
HK Electric Customer Service Hotline: 2887 3411
Finally, if you suspect you've been scammed, call the Police Anti-Fraud Hotline immediately on 18222!"

Feb 5:  1.0 Gbps!

Waiting for 20+ years of HK-wide lowest Internet speed via a 3 Mbps phone line, I'm pretty happy with the fiber broadband speed these days, 1,000 Mbps!

Most of Lamma is supposed to get connected, they promised, plus half the fiber capacity to be available to other telecom providers. How's that going? Not very well, from feedback I received.

Feb 4:  Cornucopia of Musical Delights

DAVESTOCK? Could that refer to longtime organiser of DickStock bands and many other local concerts, Dave Wilkinson?

DickStocks have also frequently been graced with posters by Harry Harrison ("Light alteration to the cornucopia of musical delights…")

Feb 3:  Moonlight Dreamer

"A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world." - Oscar Wilde  [Photo: Mark Malby]

"The moon, the moon, th'inconstant moon.
Even the perpetual pier reconstruction looks peaceful enough under the light of the moon."
